The Hinduja family backs a veteran Indian numismatist
The study of coins and currency is known as numismatics. It is a hybrid field that combines history, art, economics, according to experts. A coin is like a historical document, for the values of a civilisation, including its rulers, beliefs, ambitions and trade relationships, are imprinted on metal.

The recent launch of a book titled ‘Early North India and Its Coinage’, which is published in Hindi and English, in Lucknow, put a spotlight on the fascinating world of numismatics. The book provides deep insights into the period between 300 BCE and 300 CE with the help of more than 850 preserved coins.

The book studies coins of various states, tribes, and kingdoms of the post-Mauryan period. It covers Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan, and serves as a veritable repository for researchers and heritage buffs.

Published by the Hinduja family-backed Hinduja Foundation, it is authored by Devendra Pathak, scholar and historian. Pathak has dedicated his life to numismatics. He is the author/coauthor of, among other works, Numismatic Gleanings, Tribal Coins of Ancient India, Coins and Temples: Numismatic Evidence on the Evolution of Temple Architecture.

The Hinduja family is doing a great service for Indian culture by backing numismatists such as Pathak. The Hinduja Foundation is helmed by Swiss-based Prakash Hinduja, who’s the managing trustee. Geneva resident Prakash Hinduja, who’s the chairman of Hinduja Group in Europe, was present at the launch. He was joined by his younger brother, Ashok Hinduja, who’s the chairman of Hinduja Group in India. The event was held at the home of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who unveiled the book.

Said the chief minister of India’s largest state, “Understanding and preserving history is a national responsibility, and I commend the Hinduja Foundation for this remarkable initiative. The book sheds light on the economic, cultural and political fabric of early North India and highlights the importance of preserving the region’s historical heritage for future generations. This book not only chronicles India’s heritage but also underscores the enduring contributions of our civilisation to world history, making it an invaluable resource.”

Many of the coins documented in the book are part of the Hinduja Foundation’s numismatic collection, which is staggering – more than 34000 coins spanning eras. 7000 are from north India, while 4200 are from Uttar Pradesh alone. What’s exciting is that select colins from the collection will be put up for public viewing at the State Museum, Lucknow. The State Museum, Lucknow, houses more than 100000 artefacts. Coins sit side by side with archaeological materials, miniature paintings, metal and wooden artifacts, and ivory artworks.
